Vodafone CallYa in Detail: Plans, eSIM, Costs, and Activation

Vodafone CallYa is one of the most well-known prepaid plans in Germany and for many people arriving in the country, an obvious first choice. Prepaid, flexible, established network, no long-term contract.
But what do you actually get? Which plan makes sense when, how does the eSIM work, what does it cost and where does CallYa fall short? This article covers everything in detail.

What CallYa is – and what it isn't
CallYa is Vodafone’s prepaid brand. That means:
- No long-term contract, no minimum term. You top up credit, book a plan, and as long as there’s credit on the account, it runs. Want to stop? Just stop topping up
- Vodafone network. CallYa uses the regular Vodafone network, one of Germany’s three major networks alongside Telekom and Telefónica/O2. Generally very good in cities, mixed in rural areas depending on the region
- No third-party reseller. Unlike many budget providers that rent network access, you’re directly with Vodafone
What CallYa is not:
- Not a contract plan with device subsidies: You bring your own phone
- No postpaid: You pay in advance, not afterwards
- Not a broadband or fixed-line bundle: CallYa is mobile only
Plans at a glance
CallYa offers several plan options. The basic structure is simple: you pick a plan that auto-renews every 28 days as long as you have enough credit.
All plans include an Allnet-Flat (unlimited calls and SMS within Germany) and support speeds up to 300 Mbit/s download and 100 Mbit/s upload. After using your data allowance, speeds are throttled to 64 kbit/s.

*EU roaming zone: EU countries plus the UK, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway. These units apply to calls and texts from Germany to these countries. Roaming (using your phone abroad) is included in all plans at no extra charge.
Which plan to start with?
For most people, the Allnet Flat S or M is the sweet spot:
- S (25 GB): Enough for navigation, messaging, banking apps, and light browsing
- M (50 GB): More comfortable if you’re out and about a lot in the first weeks without reliable Wi-Fi. Apartment hunting, office visits, navigating a new city adds up fast
- L (100 GB): Makes sense if you know you’ll use data heavily, for example because you don’t have Wi-Fi at home yet or regularly stream content on the go
- Start (2 GB): Only as an absolute bare-minimum solution. Anyone actively on the move will hit the limit fast
- Black (Unlimited): A very expensive option. If you need unlimited data, you’re better off looking at an alternative like FUNK
You can upgrade or downgrade your plan at any time for the next billing period. There’s no commitment to a specific tier.
There’s one plan Vodafone doesn’t actively advertise: the CallYa Allnet Flat XS. It offers 12 GB for 7.99 Euro per 28 days.
How to get it:
Vodafone occasionally offers this plan to existing customers via SMS, the 224466 shortcode, or the MeinVodafone app. But here’s the thing: any CallYa customer can book it, you just have to ask for it explicitly. The plan doesn’t appear in the regular plan listings, but if you request it through one of the following channels, it will be booked:
- WhatsApp/SMS chat with the CallYa bot TOBi: 0172 2000 229: Ask directly for the “CallYa Allnet Flat XS”
- CallYa hotline: 0172 229 0 229: Request the XS plan
- Contact form via email on the Vodafone website: Mention the plan name explicitly
The catch: You need to be an existing CallYa customer first. So the strategy is: Start with any CallYa plan, then actively ask to switch to the XS through one of the channels above.
eSIM or physical SIM?
CallYa comes in two versions: as an eSIM or as a classic physical SIM card. The choice depends on what your smartphone supports and how quickly you want to get started.
eSIM:
- A digital SIM profile that’s loaded directly onto your phone, no physical card needed
- Can be ordered online before you leave for Germany
- Activates immediately after identity verification in Germany
- No need to visit a store, no waiting for postal delivery
- Most newer smartphone models support eSIM; check your device settings beforehand to confirm
Physical SIM:
- The classic plastic card you insert into your phone
- Necessary if your phone doesn’t support eSIM
- Available at post offices, gas stations, drugstores, supermarkets, or online with postal delivery
- Requires a bit more time and logistics than the eSIM option
Our tip: If your phone supports eSIM, order CallYa as an eSIM, ideally before your trip. That way, you’ll have the least hassle after arrival. If your phone only supports physical SIM, your best bet is to buy the card directly at a post office or supermarket once you’re there.
Ordering and activation step by step
Option 1: eSIM
- Before departure: Go to vodafone.de, select CallYa with eSIM, enter your details, and choose your plan
- Receive order confirmation: You’ll get an email with your login details and activation instructions
- After arriving in Germany: Complete identity verification via PostIdent
- Load your eSIM profile: After successful verification, you’ll receive a QR code or activation link. Scan the code in your smartphone’s eSIM settings
- Top up your balance: You can do this at gas stations, supermarkets, or drugstores, or use the online top-up function via credit card or PayPal on the Vodafone website or app
- Done. Your German number is active. Your plan is running, data is ready to go
- Account management: We recommend registering on both the Vodafone website and the Vodafone app
Option 2: Physical SIM
- Buy a CallYa SIM card at a post office, drugstore, or supermarket (Note: Check the packaging carefully, the data volume and plan name are printed on the outside)
- Go to Vodafone’s registration website and follow the instructions
- Insert the SIM and restart your phone
- Complete identity verification via PostIdent: You can do this right at the post office where you bought the SIM
- Done. Your number and mobile data are active
- Account management: We recommend registering on both the Vodafone website and the Vodafone app
For both options: Without completing identity verification, your SIM remains locked. Verification is the crucial step.
Identity verification: PostIdent, VideoIdent, eID, and in-store verification
In Germany, identity verification for SIM cards is required by law. Vodafone offers four methods:
PostIdent:
- Go to any Deutsche Post branch
- Show your passport or ID card
- Staff will handle the verification process, it takes about 5–10 minutes
- Works reliably, even with foreign passports and travel documents
- Almost never fails in practice
VideoIdent:
- Video call via an app or website
- An agent checks your ID via camera
- Sounds convenient, but this is often where things go wrong: connection issues, lighting problems, app permissions, long wait times
- Acceptance of foreign passports can be limited
eID (electronic ID):
- Uses the online ID function of a German or EU-ID card
- Requires a compatible smartphone or card reader and an activated eID function
- Fast and convenient but only an option if you already have a German/EU ID card or an eAT (residence permit) with eID enabled
- Not available with foreign passports
In-store verification (Vodafone Shop):
- Go to a Vodafone retail store with your passport or ID
- Staff verify your identity on the spot
- Convenient if there’s a Vodafone shop nearby
- Staff might demand a fee or try to sell more expensive plans
When you’re just starting out, PostIdent is the best option. It’s more predictable, more reliable, and for most people the less stressful way to get started. If you combine the verification with other errands, it hardly costs you any extra time.
Once you have your electronic residence permit (eAT), you can use the eID function for future verifications, it’s fully digital and even faster.

Costs and top-ups
CallYa is prepaid: You load credit onto your account, and your plan fee is deducted every 28 days.
Top-up options:
- Vodafone app (via credit card, PayPal, or direct debit)
- Online on the Vodafone website
- Top-up cards at gas stations, supermarkets, and drugstores
- Bank transfer to your CallYa account
Automatic top-up: In the app, you can set up automatic top-up: Whenever your balance falls below a certain amount, it gets refilled. Handy if you don’t want to think about it.
What happens when your balance runs out?
- Your plan won’t renew until you add more credit
- You can still receive calls and texts at your number, but you won’t be able to make calls, send texts, or use mobile data
- As soon as you top up, everything works normally again
Important: If you don’t top up for an extended period (around 15 months), Vodafone may eventually deactivate your SIM. Avoid this by topping up regularly.
Network and coverage
CallYa uses the regular Vodafone network, the same network as the postpaid plans. So you’re not getting a watered-down version.
In practice:
- In cities and urban areas: Generally very good coverage with LTE and 5G
- In rural areas: Variable. In some regions, Vodafone is strong; in others, Telekom or Telefónica/O2 have the better signal. It really depends on your specific location.
- Inside buildings: As with all networks, indoor coverage is typically weaker than outdoors
Why we still recommend Vodafone:
No network in Germany is perfect everywhere. Whether Vodafone, Telekom, or Telefónica/O2 works best depends heavily on where you live and move around. Vodafone offers solid overall coverage at fair prepaid rates, that’s exactly why it works well as a starting point. If you notice after a few weeks that another network performs better in your area, you can easily switch thanks to prepaid flexibility.
CallYa abroad: EU roaming
Thanks to EU roaming regulations, you can use your CallYa plan in all EU countries as well as the UK, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway essentially the same way as in Germany:
- Calls, texts, and mobile data at the same rates as in Germany
- No separate roaming surcharge within the EU
But there are limits:
- Fair use rules apply. Your roaming data allowance may be slightly lower than what you get in Germany. The exact amount depends on your plan.
- Outside the EU (Switzerland, Turkey, USA, etc.), rates are significantly higher. Costs can add up quickly. When in doubt: Deactivate CallYa and get a local SIM instead.
For occasional trips within the EU, CallYa works without issues. For longer stays abroad (six months or more), a local SIM is the better choice.
The Vodafone app in daily use
The MeinVodafone app is your central tool for everything related to CallYa:
- Check and top up your balance
- Switch plans: anytime, effective from the next 28-day cycle
- Monitor your data usage
- Set up automatic top-up
- View bookings and transactions
Honest assessment:
The app is functional and clear. For prepaid management, it does what it’s supposed to. It’s no design masterpiece, but it’s reliable. Topping up, switching plans, and checking usage is quick and straightforward.
The app is available in German and English.
Annual plans (Jahrestarife): An option, but rarely the best one
CallYa also offers annual plans where you pay for 12 months upfront. The per-month cost is lower, but you lose the core advantage of prepaid: flexibility.
All annual plans include an Allnet-Flat (unlimited calls and SMS within Germany), 2,400 units for calls and SMS from Germany to the EU roaming zone, and speeds up to 300 Mbit/s download and 100 Mbit/s upload.

Our take: Annual plans combine the downsides of prepaid (payment in advance) with the downside of contracts (commitment). If you know you’ll stay long-term and want to save money, a postpaid plan usually offers better value.
Who CallYa is right for – and when switching makes sense
CallYa is a good choice if you:
- Need flexibility: No contract with a long minimum term
- Don’t yet know how much data you actually need or which network works best at your location
- Want to play it safe with one of the major network operators rather than a discount provider
- Want a manageable, predictable price with no surprises on your bill
Switching might make sense if:
- After a few months, you realize you need significantly more data than CallYa offers: Some contract plans or discount providers deliver more GB per euro
- Vodafone coverage at your location turns out to be weaker than expected: Then switching to the Telekom or O2 network might be worthwhile
- You’re staying in Germany long-term and can get better rates with a contract
Conclusion
CallYa does exactly what a good prepaid plan should do: It works reliably, stays flexible, and doesn’t throw any surprises at you. You’re on the Vodafone network, have practical everyday rates, and can switch anytime if your needs change.
The eSIM option makes getting started especially easy: Order in advance, verify your identity via PostIdent, and you’re good to go. No waiting for a plastic card, no hunting for a shop.
Where CallYa hits its limits: If you need a lot of data, you’ll pay more per Gigabyte with prepaid than with postpaid plans. And if you live in an area with weak Vodafone coverage, you’d be better off with a different network. But both of these only become clear after a few weeks. And that’s exactly why a flexible prepaid start is the right strategy.
