N26 Current Account: Full Review – Fees, Cards, Cash, and Where It Falls Short

By: Simon Heinrich – Last updated: 04/2026

N26 is one of Europe’s best-known neobanks and one of the pioneers of app-only banking in Germany. It has no branch network, no connection to a physical ATM system, and no way to deposit cash through machines. What it offers instead is one of the cleanest, most modern banking apps on the market, available fully in both English and German.

In this article, we break down what the N26 current account actually offers: the different account tiers, when it’s really free (and when it isn’t), which cards you get, how you get your hands on cash, what the app is like day to day, and who N26 actually suits.

Account models: which one you actually need

N26 offers several account tiers, mostly differing in extra features and limits.

N26 Standard
The base model. Includes a Mastercard debit card, full mobile banking, and all core features. Sufficient for most people’s day-to-day banking. Cost: 0.00 Euro per month.

N26 Smart
Adds Spaces (sub-accounts), round-up savings, spending statistics, and a colored card option. Costs 4.90 Euro per month.

N26 Go
Everything from Smart, plus travel and accident insurance and free foreign currency withdrawals. Costs 9.90 Euro per month.

N26 Metal
The premium tier, with a metal card, expanded insurance coverage, and priority support. Costs 16.90 Euro per month, more of a lifestyle and status product, and its insurance perks are often cheaper bought separately.

Important: All tiers run on the same app and infrastructure. The difference lies in card design, limits, and bundled extras. You can upgrade or downgrade at any time.

Account fees: when it's really free

N26 markets the Standard account as free, regardless of age, income, or activity.

  • N26 Standard: no monthly account fee

  • N26 Smart / Go / Metal: fixed monthly fee (€4.90 / €9.90 / €16.90), regardless of usage or income

The catch most people miss: The Mastercard debit card comes with a €10 issuance and manufacturing fee, charged both when you first get the card and every time it needs to be replaced, whether due to loss, theft, or expiry.

This matters because the card isn’t optional. Without it, there’s no way to access cash through N26, and cash is still something you regularly need in Germany. So the account isn’t really unconditionally free; the account itself has no monthly fee, but a recurring card cost that’s practically unavoidable in daily life.

Cards: what's included, what's optional, what's worth it

Mastercard debit card (10 Euro issuance/replacement fee)

  • Accepted anywhere Mastercard is accepted
  • Contactless payments via NFC
  • Compatible with Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Garmin Pay
  • Money is deducted directly from your account balance; no separate credit line
  • Covers most everyday situations, but costs 10 Euro again with every replacement

Girocard

N26 doesn’t offer a Girocard. At places that only accept Girocard (small shops, some parking garages, weekly markets), your Mastercard won’t work directly. In practice, that means withdrawing cash beforehand and paying in cash instead, an extra step that accounts with Girocard support don’t require.

Credit card

N26 doesn’t offer a traditional credit card with monthly billing. All its cards are debit cards that charge directly. If you need a real credit card for car rentals or hotel bookings, you’ll need to get one elsewhere.

Cash: withdrawals, deposits, and N26's biggest weakness

This is the area where N26 struggles the most.

Withdrawals

Method Details
Mastercard at any ATM Works in Germany and worldwide
Free ATM withdrawals (Standard/Smart/Go/Metal) 2 / 3 / 5 / 8 per month in the eurozone
Additional withdrawals €2 fee per transaction
Withdrawls at supermarket checkout Unlimited uses, but max €200 per transaction
Foreign currency withdrawals Free from N26 Go upward, otherwise a 1.70% fee

Deposits

This is N26’s biggest structural weakness: there’s no way to deposit cash directly, no ATMs, no retail cash service of its own.

The only option is a cash deposit through the third-party provider Cash26 at participating retail partners. These deposits are notably limited and come with fees:

  • Fee: 1.50% of the deposit amount

  • Maximum 999 Euro per day

  • Maximum 8,000 Euro per month

Overall assessment: If cash plays any regular role in your life, whether from tips, a side job, or cash gifts, N26 is clearly restrictive here, both in terms of amounts and cost.

Online banking and app: what to expect

N26 was built from the ground up as an app-only bank, and it shows.

Core features

  • Login via fingerprint or face recognition
  • App-based push confirmation for every transaction (no separate TAN system needed)
  • Real-time notifications for every card transaction
  • Spaces (sub-accounts) for budgeting
  • Apple Pay, Google Pay, Garmin Pay

Honest assessment of the app

N26’s app is widely considered one of the cleanest-designed banking apps in Germany. Clear structure, fast load times, intuitive navigation. Transfers, card management, and spending overviews take just a few taps.

The trade-off: since N26 has no branch infrastructure, all support runs exclusively through the app or chat. For more complex issues (like account freezes), users occasionally report slow response times.

Language

The app, web interface, and support are all available in full English, a genuine advantage over most German banks. In practice:

  • You never have to navigate German banking terminology
  • Support chat is handled in English, not translated on the fly
  • Documents and terms are available in English as well

If English-language banking matters to you, N26 covers that ground well.

Using N26 abroad: where it works well

Who N26 is good for – and who might look elsewhere

N26 is a solid choice if you:

  • Want to bank entirely in English, support included
  • Want a modern, clean app experience
  • Rarely deal with cash in daily life
  • Prefer a fast, fully digital account opening with no branch visits

N26 might not be the best fit if:

  • You regularly need to deposit cash. The fee and limits make this impractical
  • You need a Girocard for certain payment terminals
  • You’d prefer a branch-based identification option
  • You value direct, personal support over app-based chat
  • You’re open to learning a bit of German. In that case, other providers often offer a stronger overall package

Conclusion: A decent option if you need English-language banking

N26 delivers a lean, modern banking experience with one of the cleanest apps on the German market, fully in English. Account maintenance is free on the Standard tier, and opening an account takes just minutes.

Look closer, though, and the trade-offs are clear: the Mastercard debit card costs €10 every time it’s issued or replaced, cash deposits are expensive and tightly capped, and there’s no Girocard at all. Overall, N26 isn’t a standout on features, it’s a solution for people who prioritize English-language banking above all else. If you’re willing to pick up a few basic German terms, other providers often offer a better overall package.
